EBYMBC VIRTUAL VOYAGE CHALLENGE

Who can do this Challenge?

Anyone!  Well anyone who is a member of EBYMBC.
You don’t even need your own boat, you can do this virtual challenge as an individual and long the sea miles you complete on any boat that you happen to find yourself on.

How do I log my sea miles?

You can use whatever method you want to track your miles, whether that be with a tracking app such as “RaceQs”, the log on your boat or by calculating direct distance once you come off the water.
Those sea miles are then loaded into the challenge calculator and your progress will be tracked.

Can I count sea miles on non EBYMBC Club days?

Yes, you can count any sea miles you travel. But.... We are going to keep tracking of EBYMBC activity vs non-EBYMBC activity.

Can I count when I’m motoring?

That is totally up to you.  You can count any sea miles you want, you might be sailing, motoring, paddling, windsurfing or moving on some random floating item.  However, you might also want to challenge yourself and only count one of the activities.

What if someone wants to cheat by adding extra miles they haven’t done?

Well, that is totally up to them, this isn’t a race and there is no reward or prize for being the first person to virtually arrive in Nelson.  To use an adage my teacher used to say if we were self-marking a test… “you are only cheating on yourself”.

So where are we going?

Well, the original idea was to do epic adventures such as a virtual circumnavigation, we then calculated the average distance sailed by a yacht in an average EBYMBC club day and worked out that if we sailed every week (I wish that was even a possibility) it would take a little over 40 years to complete!

So, we have down scaled a little bit and are looking at something along the lines of a voyage from Wellington to Nelson.

The trip is an approximately 120Nm adventure which virtually takes you out of Te Whanganui-a-Tara (Wellington Harbour), across the notorious wind factory on Wellington’s South Coast, through the infamous Karori Rip, across Cook Strait (Te Moana-o-Raukawa), past “The Brothers” (Ngāwhatu-kai-ponu), to the north of the beautiful Marlborough Sounds (Te Tauihu-o-te-Waka), around Stephens Island (Takapourewa), down the western side of D’Urville Island (Rangitoto ki te Tonga) before stretching into Tasman Bay (Te Tai-o-Aorere) and onto Nelson.

How do I get involved?

Simply start adding your sea miles into the challenge calculator and you'll be included on the virtual chart with your location updated as you log your miles (NB: we are running a manual system at the moment so your location will take a bit of time to update on the chart).

How do I see how I'm going?

Check out the google map above, it has everyone's location on the google map as well as the track to our destination.
