Dinghies

Dinghies are small, relatively simple boats usually sailed by one or two people. They are a great way to learn how to sail because they allow you to learn all the basic concepts of sailing with far less complicated equipment, and at a much lower cost. They are also very safe and a lot of fun! However you do need to have a little experience, perhaps from doing one of our Learn to Sail courses , before you can crew in a race.

Types of dinghy often raced at Evans Bay include:

Centreboard (non-trapeze)	420 & 470
Paper Tiger	Flying Fifteen

Trailer Yachts

A trailer yacht is so named because, when not sailing, it is stored on a trailer 'on the hard', i.e. out of the water. Trailer yachts are much larger than most dinghies, and more complex, but because you are part of a larger crew (around 3-5 people) you can be a complete beginner and learn as you go.

Keelers

Keelers, or cruising yachts, are often much larger than trailer yachts. They have a deep keel built into the hull so cannot be stored on a trailer, instead they are moored in a marina or at a mooring buoy. They can cope with much heavier weather than dinghies and trailer yachts, and so in Wellington are a good boat to sail. They are also a good way to get out on the water for the very first time since they are usually able to carry more people than are necessary to crew them, meaning that you can just watch how it all works.
